How to use soft light for better portraits
Soft light creates gradual shadows and is often flattering for portraits.
Look for open shade
Place the subject near the edge of shade so the face receives bright, even light without harsh highlights.
Use window light
A large window works like a soft light source. Turn the subject slightly toward it to shape the face.
Avoid mixed colour temperatures
Combining warm indoor light with cool daylight can make skin tones difficult to correct.
Watch the background
Choose a background that is less bright than the face so the subject remains the visual priority.
