7 composition mistakes beginners make
Strong composition begins with removing distractions and making the subject easy to identify.
1. No clear subject
Before taking the picture, decide what the viewer should notice first.
2. Busy edges
Scan every corner of the frame for objects that pull attention away from the subject.
3. Too much empty space
Negative space can be useful, but it should support the image rather than make it feel accidental.
4. Ignoring the background
Move a few steps left or right to separate the subject from distracting objects.
5. Centering everything
Try placing the subject slightly off-centre and balance it with another visual element.
6. Crooked horizons
Use grid lines and check the horizon before pressing the shutter.
7. Shooting only one frame
Change height, distance and angle. Small variations often produce a much stronger result.
